Vernon Brown kept his diary notes in three books.  The first (February 1917 till January 1918) is an elegant bound volume (114 x 90 mm), shown as book 1 below.  Book 2 is loose leaves (115 x 90 mm) held together with string  and covers the period January to August 1918).  Book 3 is a loose leaf folder with metal clips holding the pages (116 x 100 mm) and covers September 1918 to January 1919.

The books are in surprisingly good condition considering the situation in which they must have been written and stored. The pages are clean with clear writing in ink, there is no sign of mud or damage from the trench environment.
